Siemens receives a third order for its state-of-the-art power plant technology from South Korea. For the Andong combined cycle power plant (CCPP) Siemens is supplying the turnkey power plant in cooperation with its partner GS E&C comprising one H-class gas turbine, one steam turbine, one generator and one heat recovery steam generator as well as the Balance of Plant (BoP), and I&C technology in a single shaft configuration.
This third order for the H-class technology from South Korea follows orders for the Bugok III and Ansan CCPPs. Purchaser is the power utility Korea Southern Power Co. Ltd. The natural-gas-fired plant will have a gross installed electrical capacity of 416 megawatts (MW) and a gross efficiency of over 61 percent. The new power plant is designed for 250 starts per year, and will need only 30 minutes for a hot start. It will therefore feature a high degree of operational flexibility. Start of commercial operation is scheduled for April 2014 after only 25 months of construction.
The Andong power plant will be built in the city of Andong in the north of the Gyeongsangbuk-do province. The power plant will be of single-shaft design identical to the first H-class plant Bugok III which is currently being erected by Siemens and which will be commissioned in early 2013. Siemens will build Andong CCPP on a turnkey basis as consortium leader with its partner GS E&C, and will deliver the main components - one SGT6-8000H gas turbine, one SST6-5000 steam turbine and one SGen6-2000H generator. Siemens is also supplying one Benson heat recovery steam generator, the BoP-equipment, and the SPPA-T3000 instrumentation and control system for the power plant. A ten-year term service agreement has also been signed for the main components.
The efficiency of gas-fired power plants plays an important role in South Korea as the country imports almost all of its gas as liquefied natural gas (LNG), resulting in high gas prices. The significant rise in power demand of 3.6 percent per annum accompanying South Korea's burgeoning economy can be met with the construction of modern CCPPs.
To respond quickly to market demands the Andong plant - needs to be very flexible with around 250 starts per year. "That our H-class power plants are very flexible in operation, we have already proven in the world-record holder plant in Irsching, Germany," said Lothar Balling, Head of Gas Turbine Power Plant Solutions in the Fossil Power Generation Division of Siemens Energy. "This type of plant can be brought up to full load in only 30 minutes, with efficiency levels of over 60 percent net after six to eight hours shutdown – and this with a starting and operational reliability of over 98 percent."
