Enogex relies on Mobil SHC Pegasus to optimise gas engine performance

• Mobil SHC Pegasus is integral to the operations of one of the world’s largest natural gas transmission plants.
• Mobil SHC Pegasus extends oil life to more than 16,000 hours of operation
• Mobil SHC Pegasus performed ‘flawlessly’ in Caterpillar G3516 engine

Mobil SHC Pegasus can help companies improve gas engine efficiency and reduce maintenance costs. Mobil SHC Pegasus, part of ExxonMobil’s range of natural gas engine oils, is now the lubricant of choice for Enogex. Enogex, one of the world’s largest natural gas transmitters, switched to the fully synthetic natural gas engine oil due to its proven ability to optimise the plant’s performance.

Enogex is engaged in natural gas gathering, processing, transportation, storage and marketing, as well as operating an 8,000 mile pipeline supplying gas to over 95,000 sq. miles. Given the company’s continuous focus on improving its operations, Enogex introduced Mobil SHC Pegasus to help optimise the performance of its Caterpillar G3516 engines.

As part of the programme to monitor the performance of Mobil SHC Pegasus, ExxonMobil engineers visited Enogex to take part in the teardown of one of the Caterpillar G3516s. Normally, operators have to change the gas engine oil after 3,000 hours of operation, but the Enogex teardown was carried out after the engine had been running for over 16,000 hours.

Even after this extended operating time, ExxonMobil engineers found that Mobil SHC Pegasus kept the engine exceptionally clean with no sludging or carbon deposits around the valve deck area. There was no evidence of recession, limited sulphated ash on the intake and discharge valves and the piston.

Following the teardown, Kevin McKenna, Product Technical Advisor for ExxonMobil Industrial Lubricants said: “Mobil SHC Pegasus delivered flawlessly in a Caterpillar G3516 natural gas engine. Looking in the combustion chambers, where operating temperatures can reach well over 650 degrees Celsius, the product performed with no evidence of deposits or thermal breakdown. The liner showed no evidence of wear whatsoever and still had its cross-hatch in it, which means that there was relatively little wear so the liners looked almost new.”

Other customers in France, Germany, Netherlands and the United States have endorsed the significant advantages achieved from the use of Mobil SHC Pegasus. In France, for example, the leading European provider of energy services, Dalkia, tested a Caterpillar G3516 generator for heat and power applications with Mobil SHC Pegasus versus conventional mineral lubricant, and recorded a gain in electricity production efficiency. Improved energy efficiency, combined with reduced oil for disposal and extended equipment life, can also help contribute to the overall sustainability of a business operating natural gas engines.
