ABB (NYSE:ABB), the leading power and automation technology group, has won an order worth around $23 million from PSE Operator SA, the state-owned transmission system operator in Poland, to deliver seven power autotransformers to be installed in substations that will support the cross-border power interconnection between Poland and Lithuania. The order was booked in the first quarter.

ABB will design, manufacture, deliver and carry out the installation and start-up of three 330 megavoltampere (MVA) transformers, three 500 MVA transformers, and one 450 MVA transformer. The transformers will be fitted with special screens to reduce noise levels, and high quality laser-cut sheet metal cores will help to maintain constant load loss levels.

“These high specification transformers are extremely reliable and designed for maximum availability, energy savings and reduced life cycle costs,” said Markus Heimbach, head of ABB’s global Transformers business, a part of the company’s Power Products division. “Our continued commitment to technology and innovation, combined with our global manufacturing footprint and local market focus enables us to provide best-in-class solutions to our customers.

The 400 kilovolt (kV) interconnection between the Ełk substation in Poland and the Alytus substation in Lithuania is currently under construction. Co-financed by the European Union, the aim is to increase energy security in Poland and neighboring countries and eventually establish a Baltic Power Ring to increase supply reliability and support expanding power markets within the Baltic region.

Transformers are integral components of an electrical grid, and essential for the efficient and safe conversion of electricity between diverse voltage systems. ABB’s transformer portfolio includes power transformers rated up to 1,200 kV, dry and liquid distribution transformers, as well as related services and components.

An autotransformer is a transformer that has a single winding with two end terminals, and is often used in power applications to interconnect systems operating at different voltage levels. ABB has previously delivered similar autotransformers to PSE Operator SA in 2005, 2007 and 2010.
