New Jersey to see new 738 MW gas-fired power plant

After strenuous government efforts to add local generation capacity in the state, New Jersey could finally see another power plant without state help. NJSpotlight reports that LS Power Group has succeeded in securing funding for a new 738-megawatt (MW) natural gas-fired power plant in West Deptford, New Jersey.

The announcement of the new gas plant comes as a bit of a surprise for many in the state, given the current status of three projects that were chosen for a pilot project to help fund new generation with rate payer subsidies.

These three other natural gas plants, chosen by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities, have faced strong opposition from rate payers, which has created problems with both the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and federal courts.

Meanwhile, LS Power managed to secure the funding necessary for its 738 MW gas-fired plant based largely on easier interconnection with the existing grid, and currently the company expects construction could start as soon as early 2012.

The announcement comes on the related news that the company has secured the site necessary for the plant from West Deptford, according to NJ.com.
