Explosion cripples Syrian oil pipeline

As violence continued in conflict-torn Syria, saboteurs destroyed a major oil pipeline supplying the western city of Homs, according to The Associated Press.

The attack came early on Thursday, December 8, and targeted the pipeline without any casualties being reported. The pipeline supplies refineries in Homs with around 140,000 barrels per day, most of which goes toward domestic use.

"This is the main pipeline that feeds the Homs refinery," said Rami Abdulrahman of the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Thus far no group has claimed credit for the attack.

Though the country's oil infrastructure has not suffered an attack since two explosions in July of this year, violence has only spiked, with the U.S. reporting that some 4,000 have been killed since March, including another 14 on Thursday. Homs itself is a hotbed of protest against the reign of President Bashar al-Assad, according to Reuters.

The oil industry in Syria is currently in a state of limbo, with most Western countries, as well as the Arab League, banning imports from the country on the basis of humanitarian abuses by the government.
