Shell starts drilling at Agbami oil field offshore Nigeria

By Phaedra Friend Troy

Chevron has commenced drilling on the Agbami oil field offshore Nigeria using the Pacific Bora ultra-deepwater drillship.

Contracted for three years, the drillship commenced operations for a Chevron subsidiary on August 10. Owned and operated by Pacific Drilling, the Pacific Bora is able to drill up to 37,500 feet deep in waters measuring 10,000 feet deep.

One of the largest oil fields offshore Nigeria, Agbami is estimated to contain some 900 million barrels of crude oil and natural gas liquids. Achieving first production in July 2008, the giant oil field was developed by an FPSO capable of producing 250,000 barrels of oil a day.
