Petrobras starts production from P-56 at Marlim Sul in the deepwaters of the Campos Basin

Brazilian major Petrobras (NYSE:PBR) has started production at the semisubmersible platform P-56 in the Marlim Sul oil and gas field in the deepwaters of the Campos Basin offshore Brazil.

Situated in waters measuring 1,670 meters deep, the P-56 platform began production through well 7-MLS-163HPRJS, which may produce up to 16,000 barrels of oil a day.

The platform will be connected to a total of 21 subsea wells -- 10 production wells and 11 water injection wells. 

A consortium between Technip and Keppel FELS won the $1.2 billion EPC contract for the facility in 2007. Based on the existing P-51 facility, the P-56 semisubmersible spans 125 meters long and 110 meters wide and weighs a total of more than 54,000 tons.

Expected to reach peak production in 2012, the P-56 platform is capable of processing up to 100,000 barrels of oil a day. In addition to processing heavy oil of 18-degrees API, the facility will be able to process up to 6 million cubic meters a day of natural gas.

The produced oil will be sent via pipeline to a Floating Storage and Offloading (FSO) vessel located about 20 kilometers away. Then, oil will be offloaded to shuttle tankers. Produced natural gas will be piped to the Cabiunas terminal for delivery to market.

A massive find, Petrobras is developing the Marlim Sul reservoir in a phased approach. Following the FPSO Marlim Sul in 2004, the P-51 platform began production on the Marlim Sul oil and gas field in January of 2009.
