Murphey taps Aker Solutions for Kikeh subsea expansion project offshore Malaysia

By Phaedra Friend Troy

US independent Murphy Oil (NYSE:MUR) has contracted Aker Solutions for subsea production equipment to support the Kikeh subsea expansion project offshore Malaysia.

Under the contract, Aker Solutions will deliver deepwater oil production equipment, including subsea trees, control modules distribution system and manifolds, to be installed in waters measuring 1,350 meters deep.

The subsea expansion projects is scheduled to be on production by 2013.

Discovered in 2002, the Kikeh oil field is located on deepwater Block K off the coast of Sabah in East Malaysia. The first deepwater development in Malaysia and the Asia Pacific region, Kikeh oil field was developed by a spar platform with dry tree and subsea wells. Oil is transferred to an FPSO, where it is processed and offloaded.

First production was achieved at Kikeh in 2007, and peak production of 120,000 barrels of oil a day was reached in 2008.

The Kakap and Gumusut fields are being tied to the Kikeh development, with first production scheduled for 2013. Several additional discoveries have been made on Block K and may also support further subsea tiebacks.
