Alaska Gov. Parnell rebukes Fish and Wildlife Service's 'unlawful' ANWR recommendation

Governor Sean Parnell objected strongly to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s (USFWS) move toward recommending that Congress designate the 1002 Area of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) as wilderness. The USFWS opened public comment on a draft 5-year management plan for the refuge that includes the potential designation of a new wilderness area in the refuge’s coastal plain.

“This is another unfortunate effort by the Obama Administration to prevent Americans from developing Alaska’s vast resources for the benefit of the country,” Governor Parnell said. “Designating the ANWR coastal plain as wilderness would lock up this highly prospective land, and deprive Americans of the ability to produce potentially billions of barrels of oil. Responsible resource development on state and federal lands is key to lessening our dependence on foreign energy and rebuilding our economy.”

The Fish and Wildlife Service’s decision to not consider oil and gas development as an option for the 1002 Area is inconsistent with existing federal law. The Parnell Administration previously reached out to the USFWS to make it clear that the agency is obligated to consider oil and gas development as an option for the 1002 Area.
