Petrobras achieves major oil flow at Lula pilot project offshore Brazil

By Phaedra Friend Troy

Petrobras (NYSE:PBR) has achieved major oil production from development well 9-RJS-660 on the Lula pilot project in the deepwaters of the Santos Basin offshore Brazil.

In May 2011, Petrobras reached an average production of 28,436 barrels of oil a day from the Lula well, the first to commercially produce oil from the Santos Basin pre-salt. In fact, combining oil and natural gas production, the Lula well achieved a flow rate of 36,322 barrels of oil equivalent a day, confirming the high production potential for the pre-salt reservoirs offshore Brazil.

Located on Block BMS-11, the Lula development currently connects a single production well to the FPSO Cidade de Angra dos Reis. Additionally, in April a gas injection well was connected. Well 9-RJS-660 re-injects produced natural gas into the reservoir.

The Lula development is ongoing, with more wells scheduled to be connected to the production vessel. Another five Lula production wells are slated to be connected to the FPSO in the future, and two more injection wells are planned for the Lula development. One will inject water, and the other will alternate between water and natural gas.

By 2012, the FPSO Cidade de Angra dos Reis is expected to produce some 100,000 barrels of oil a day.

Petrobras serves as the operator of the block with 65 percent interest. Project partners include BG Group with 25 percent and Galp Energia with 10 percent.
