OGX discovers oils at Tambora in the Campos Basin offshore Brazil

By Phaedra Friend Troy

Brazilian independent OGX has discovered oil with its Tambora exploration well in the shallow waters of the Campos Basin offshore Brazil.

Located on Block BM-C-41, wildcat well 1-OGX-52-RJS transected hydrocarbons in the Santonian and Albian formations. A hydrocarbon column measuring about 12 meters (5 meters of net pay) of sandstone reservoirs were transected in the Santonian section, and a hydrocarbon column measuring 174 meters (96 meters of net pay) was encountered in carbonates in the Albian section.

“This new discovery nearby the Waimea accumulation successfully tested Albian calcarenites in a deeper position, completely independent of the prior discovery,” said Paulo Mendoca, general executive officer and exploration officer for OGX. “Also, it is important to note the discovery of oil in sandstone reservoirs of the Santonian age. These discoveries confirm, as we have mentioned, significant potential remaining resources in this important oil province in the southern portion of the Campos Basin.”

Situated about 93 kilometers off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, the Tambora discovery is located in waters measuring 130 meters deep. The Ocean Ambassador spud the well on July 4, 2011.

Other oil discoveries on Block BM-C-41 include Osomo, Chimborazo, Illumani, Tupungato, Fuji, Etna, Santa Helena, Pipeline and Waimea.

OGX expects to begin oil production through an extended well test at the Waimea complex in October 2001, with a production rate of up to 40,000 barrels of oil a day via the FPSO OSX-1.

OGX wholly owns and operated Block BM-C-41. Integrated development of the many discoveries on Block BM-C-41 may prove economically advantageous.
