Itron Inc. (NASDAQ:ITRI) announced that it has installed more than 150,000 Itron gas meter communication modules in the greater Houston area for the natural gas distribution subsidiary of CenterPoint Energy, Inc. (CenterPoint Energy). The communication modules use radio transmitting devices attached to CenterPoint Energy’s customers’ existing natural gas meters allowing readings from each meter to be collected once a month by a mobile meter reading device mounted to a CenterPoint Energy vehicle. This virtually eliminates the need for a meter reader to enter a customer’s yard to manually read the meter. The project will include a total of 1.2 million communication modules and will be completed by 2013.

Deploying Itron’s ChoiceConnect® 100G Datalogging ERT® gas modules will offer CenterPoint Energy greater meter reading efficiencies and enhanced customer satisfaction.

“CenterPoint Energy is a valued Itron customer and we are very excited to help them bring the benefits of smart metering to their natural gas customers,” said Philip Mezey, Itron president and COO. “We are seeing more and more forward-looking gas utilities, like CenterPoint Energy, take advantage of smart metering technologies that offer real advancements in customer service.”
