Chevron taps Halliburton for shale natural gas exploration in Poland

By Phaedra Friend Troy

US super-major Chevron (NYSE:CVX) has awarded oilfield services firm Halliburton (NYSE:HAL) the contract for integrated services for shale natural gas exploration in Poland.

Chevron plans to begin exploration drilling for shale gas at its Polska project in the fourth quarter of 2011.

The integrated services contract is for three years, with possible extensions, and under the contract Halliburton will provide drilling services, mud logging, cementing, coiled tubing, slickline services, well testing, completion and hydraulic fracturing, as well as project management services.

“Halliburton is committed to delivering the same industry-leading expertise and service for shale gas projects in Europe as we are delivering every day in North America,” said Brady Murphy, Halliburton senior vice president, Europe/West Africa Region. “We have invested early in Poland, and we have the people and the technologies in place to support this growing market.”

Located in southeastern Poland, the Polska exploration and production license was awarded to Chevron in December 2009. The five-year concession calls for Chevron to perform seismic study and exploratory drilling, but not necessarily production. According to a report from Oil & Gas Journal, Chevron is required to assess the difficulty of producing the natural gas, not necessarily to extract it.

While shale natural gas drilling and production has taken off in North America through the use of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing, other regions of the world are just starting shale exploration and development. Poland is expected to contain extensive shale resources, and the country has awarded nearly 60 exploration concessions in the Silurian and Ordovician shale plays. Independents and super-majors are joining the search for this Polish resource.
