ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won an order worth about $28 million from the Germany-based general contractor Kraftanlagen München, to provide a turnkey electrical solution for a new generating unit being constructed at the Kladno I combined heat and power plant near Prague. The order was booked in the second quarter.

ABB will design, engineer and install a complete electrical balance of plant solution including the supply of key products such as high-, medium-, and low-voltage switchgear; power, auxiliary and distribution transformers, as well as bus ducts, protection and low-voltage drives. The unit is scheduled for completion by the end of 2013.

The plant is owned by Alpiq Generation (CZ), a subsidiary of Alpiq, a leading Swiss energy company. The new unit will provide additional generating capacity of 135 megawatts (MW) of electric power and 105 MW of thermal energy. The electricity generated will be fed into the local power grid. Heat will be fed into the district heating network serving the city of Kladno. The new generating unit replaces a four decades old coal-fired unit. The main fuel is a combination of lignite and biomass, which will significantly improve the plant's overall efficiency and carbon footprint, lowering its environmental impact.

“This is a great example of how we can add power capacity with due consideration for the environment. ABB has best-in-class power and automation systems that help optimize plant performance and maximize energy efficiency,” said Franz-Josef Mengede, head of ABB’s global power generation business, a part of the company’s Power Systems division.

ABB has previously supplied similar solutions including distributed control systems, turbine controls, instrumentation, and coal and ash handling systems for the three existing units at Kladno I, which were built between 1998 and 2000. ABB has also provided the life cycle services to the plant.

ABB’s comprehensive portfolio for the power generation sector includes integrated instrumentation, control, automation and electrical solutions that help optimize power plant performance, improve reliability, enhance efficiency and minimize environmental impact.
