Petrobras begins extended well test at Brava in Brazil's pre-salt

By Phaedra Friend Troy

Brazilian major Petrobras (NYSE:PBR) has begun an extended well test in the Brava area of the Marlim oil field in the Campos Basin pre-salt offshore Brazil

Scheduled to span two years, the Brava extended well test is expected to produce 6,000 barrels of oil a day from well 6-MRL-199-RJS. The Brava well is producing to Platform P-27, which is located about 4.5 kilometers away.

Offering additional information about reservoir characteristics, the Brava extended well test will allow Petrobras to prepare for a long-term field development for the reservoir. Additionally, the data obtained will be used to study the characteristics of the Marlim and Voador fields.

Brava will be the third reservoir to produce oil from the pre-salt in the Campos Basin. The first was Jubarte in September 2008, and then in July 2010, Petrobras began producing from a pre-salt reservoir in the Baleia Franca field.

Located about 170 kilometers from the city of Macae, Rio de Janeiro, the Marlim oil field is situted in waters measuring 648 meters deep. The Brava pre-salt was discovered in April 2010 by well 6-MRL-199D-RJS at a depth of 5,000 meters.

Initial estimates as to the recoverable volumes at Brava are 380 million barrels of oil equivalent.
