New GDF Suez 435MW CCGT plant featuring GE technology inaugurated in France

Based on advanced technology from GE (NYSE: GE), a new combined-cycle gas turbine power plant at Montoir de Bretagne in the Loire Atlantique region of western France was officially inaugurated and is producing 435-megawatts of power, enough to serve about 450,000 French households.

The plant is owned and operated by GDF SUEZ, the French multinational energy company, and enables GDF SUEZ to provide additional electricity to the South Brittany region, especially during peak demand periods such as the winter months. An inauguration ceremony at the new plant was attended by Gérard Mestrallet, GDF Suez CEO and other executives from GDF SUEZ and GE, as well as local government officials.

The new combined-cycle facility features a GE 109FB combined-cycle system including a Frame 9FB gas turbine, a high efficiency advanced technology (HEAT™) steam turbine and associated generators. The 9FB is among the world’s most advanced, air-cooled 50-hertz gas turbines and is the largest member of GE’s family of F-technology machines. Both the 9FB and the steam turbine are designed to offer maximum efficiency and performance.

“This is a milestone project for us. Our 9FB technology has been well-proven in applications across Europe, and with the GDF SUEZ project, we now are bringing this advanced technology to France. Our 9FB was designed to help our customers meet their growing requirements for flexible, reliable and cost-effective power,” said Ricardo Cordoba, president of GE Energy Western Europe and North Africa.

GDF SUEZ, like many of today’s power plant operators, seeks increased operating flexibility including improved turndown capability, greater fuel flexibility and faster startups, to meet fluctuating demands for electricity. GE’s 9FB technology has been designed to meet these requirements.

The 9FB for the GDF SUEZ project was manufactured at GE’s European gas turbine headquarters in Belfort, France, and shipped to Montoir de Bretagne in early 2009. In combined-cycle operation, the 9FB delivers an energy efficiency of greater than 58 percent. Addressing the growing need for cleaner power, the 9FB is equipped with GE’s advanced, dry low NOx combustion system, which limits NOx emissions to 25 parts per million or less.
