Fire breaks out on Al Shaheen platform offshore Qatar

By Phaedra Friend Troy

A fire broke out in the early morning hours of April 21 aboard the Maersk Oil Qatar-operated AD accommodation platform located on the Al Shaheen oil field, approximately 80 kilometers north of Qatar in the Persian Gulf.

The fire ignited in the emergency generator room, forcing the evacuation of non-essential personnel aboard the accommodation platform.

The fire has since been extinguished, and the situation is under control. All of the offshore staff is safe, and there were no serious injuries resulting from the accident.

“Our primary concern remains the safety and wellbeing of our personnel and those affected by the situation,” Maersk Oil said in the statement.

The company is offering crisis counseling to those involved.

There was no oil at the time of the fire because three days before, production at the A-location was shut-in for planned maintenance work. As a result, there was no environmental impact from the accident.

Maersk Oil is investigating the cause of the fire.

Maersk Oil operates the Al Shaheen oil field on behalf of Qatar Petroleum. Presently, there are 1,008 personnel working offshore on the field, 242 of which were at the A location.
