US rig count increases

HOUSTON, Mar. 4
-- The US rotary rig count regained some of the previous week’s loss with 1,707 units drilling, a net addition of 8, Baker Hughes Inc. reported, compared with 1,396 active in the comparable period last year.

Land operations were the leader, up by 7 rigs to 1,665 active. Inland waters activity increased by 1 unit to 17 working. Offshore drilling was unchanged at 25 rotary rigs drilling, all of them in the Gulf of Mexico

Among the active US rigs, 899 were drilling for natural gas, 7 fewer than the previous week. The number drilling for oil increased by 18 to 801. There were 7 rotary rigs unclassified. Horizontal drilling fell by 11 rigs to 970. Directional drilling increased by 14 to 234.

Pennsylvania’s weekly rig count suffered the biggest loss, down 11 to 99 working. Texas dropped 5 to 733. Arkansas was down by 1 unit to 34. Wyoming and Alaska were unchanged at 46 and 6, respectively. Louisiana and West Virginia added 1 rig each for respective counts of 172 and 21. California increased by 2 units to 40, while New Mexico was up 3 to 76. North Dakota had 154 rigs working, 4 more than the previous week. Oklahoma had the largest addition, 5 rotary rigs for a total 163 drilling.

Canada’s rotary rig count increased by 2 units to 625 rotary rigs working compared with 543 in the same period a year ago.
