Siemens wins two contracts for advanced instrumentation

Siemens Energy's Instrumentation, Controls & Electrical (IC&E) Business Unit has signed two new contracts for its innovative plant-wide distributed control systems. 

Siemens will upgrade the existing control systems of five Oglethorpe Power Corporation (OPC) power plants with the Siemens Power Plant Automation T3000 (SPPA-T3000) system. The new controls are expected to improve plant operation, maintainability, reliability and efficiency at each location. Additionally, Voith Hydro, Inc., sub-contractor for American Municipal Power (AMP), has contracted Siemens to install and test its SPPA-E3000 electrical system at four new power houses of AMP's Ohio River project. 

The Siemens scope of supply for the OPC order consists of providing SPPA-T3000 control upgrades for the Chattahoochee combined cycle energy facility, in addition to its Smarr, Hawk Road, Sewell Creek and Talbot County simple cycle energy facilities located in the state of Georgia. The first of the five energy facility controls upgrades will take place at the Chattahoochee Energy Facility during the plant's November 2011 outage. The remaining projects are scheduled to be implemented between March 2011 and March 2014. Siemens will supply its SPPA-T3000 control system for the 17 gas turbines, one steam turbine, two heat recovery steam generators and the balance-of-plant controls that are spread across the various sites. The newly installed control systems will provide an easy-to-use single control platform for each energy facility. 

The Ohio River project consists of four new power houses with a total of 11 bulb-type turbines. The four run-of-the-river hydroelectric plants are located at the existing locks at the sites of Willow Island near Waverly, West Virginia; Cannelton in Hancock County, Kentucky; Smithland in Livingston County, Kentucky; and Mehldahl in Bracken County, Kentucky. Combined, these projects have an expected capacity of 313 MW. All four hydroelectric plants provide clean, renewable energy for AMP customers in the Ohio River area. Siemens' scope of supply is to provide the integrated SPPA-E3000 electrical system, which will provide the electrical controls, as well as synchronization, coordination and protection for all of the 11 bulb turbines. The sub-contract was signed with Voith Hydro, Inc., with the end owner being AMP and the owner's engineering company MWH.

"Additionally, our ability to build, integrate, test and commission automation projects of the magnitude of the Ohio River project all under the same roof is a unique capability that is of great value to our customer base." 

The SPPA-T3000 is a web-based power plant I&C system specifically designed to implement total power plant and turbine control on a common, easy-to-use control platform. The system can be integrated seamlessly into existing IT landscapes, independent of the original equipment manufacturer (OEM), to provide real-time functionalities for operations, engineering, diagnostics, archiving, alarm and field devices. With a secured java-enabled interface, authorized users can gain access securely at any time from any location. In addition, Embedded Component Services technology simplifies power plant operation and maintenance and enables plant operators to run individual power plant units in a flexible operating mode exactly matching the demand.
