Shell JV makes 'significant' deepwater oil discovery offshore Brunei

By Phaedra Friend Troy

A Shell JV has announced a “significant new oil discovery” in the deepwaters offshore Brunei, and plans further appraisal drilling to determine the size of the oil field and the appropriate development plan.

Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) has made an oil discovery at Geronggong in the 3rd Offshore Acreage Area in the waters offshore Brunei in Southeast Asia.

Located about 100 kilometers offshore and in waters measuring 1,000 meters deep, the Geronggong discovery well was drilled by the Noble Phoenix deepwater drillship.

While evaluation of the well data continues, BSP reports that initial analysis estimates the field’s size as “several hundred million barrels of oil in place.” Although the deepest well offshore Brunei, BSP has discovered hydrocarbons nearby the field.

"I am delighted that the ongoing high success rates of near field exploration in Brunei in the last years have been augmented by this significant volume addition in the deepwater", said Ceri Powell, Shell's Executive Vice President of Exploration Upstream International, "It is testament to the quality of the technical exploration analysis undertaken within Brunei Shell Petroleum, supported by the latest technologies and knowledge sharing from within Shell."

The Noble Phoenix drillship underwent refurbishment and recertification on its thrusters, riser and blow-out preventer (BOP) prior to earning compliance for deepwater drilling.

The joint venture plans to fully assess the recovery potential of the Geronggong oil field, with additional appraisal wells to be drilled in the next two years.
