Encana coal fight

Maxim Power Corp. has proposed to build a 500-megawatt (MW) plant near Grande Cache in Alberta. But environmentalists and fellow power producer, EnCana, say the plant would increase the province’s greenhouse gas emissions too much.

The proposed plant would stand next to the already existing 150 MW HR Milner plant and would generate about three million tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year.

“The operation of Milner 2 will add appreciably to the level of GHG emissions in Alberta,” EnCana said in a letter to the Alberta Utilities Commission.

EnCana owns and operates natural gas-fired power plants in Alberta and is subject to legislation and regulations that require emissions reductions.

An environmental research group, The Pembina Institute, has also filed an objection against Milner 2.
