Pre-Salt Find: Petrobras discovers oil with Macunaima in the Santos Basin offshore Brazil

Brazilian major Petrobras (NYSE:PBRhas discovered oil at the Macunaima prospect with the 4-BRSA-818 (4-RJS-668) exploration well in the deepwaters of the Santos Basin offshore Brazil.

The Macunaima prospect transected a new accumulation of good-quality oil measuring 26 degrees API.

Drilled in waters measuring 2,134 meters deep, the discovery well is located in the I-RJS-617D (Parati) assessment area of Block BM-S-10, about 244 kilometers offshore the state of Rio de Janeiro. The Macunaima discovery is just east of the Lula and Cernambi fields, and the Parati field is also located on the block.

Well logging confirmed the discovery via cable test in the pre-salt reservoir at a depth of approximately 5,680 meters.

Project partners plant to continue activities and investments in the discovery to assets the oil deposit, per the Evaluation Plan approved by the National Petroleum Regulator (ANP) of Brazil. Completion of these appraisal activities is expected by April 2012.

Petrobras serves as the operator of Block BM-S-10 with 65 percent interest. Project partners include BG Group with 25 percent interest and Partex Brasil with the remaining 10 percent interest.
