Petrobras makes massive light oil discovery near Carioca offshore Brazil

By Phaedra Friend Troy

Brazilian super-major Petrobras (NYSE:PBR) has confirmed a new light oil discovery at Carioca Nordeste nearby its Carioca oil field on Block BM-S-9 in the ultra-deepwaters of the Santos Basin offshore Brazil.

Drilled in waters measuring 2,151 meters deep, Carioca Nordeste is located about 275 kilometers off the coast of the state of Sao Paulo. Initial analysis confirmed that the 3-BRSA-861-SPS (3-SPS-74) exploratory well transected 250 meters of good-quality 26-degree API light oil.

Drilling is complete on the well, and drill stem tests are planned.

Block BM-S-9 is split into two areas. Well 1-BRSA-594-SPS (I-SPS-55) delineates the Guara area, and well 1-BRSA-491-SPS (1-SPS-50) delineates the Carioca area. The new discovery is situated in the later sector, about 9 kilometers northeast of the Carioca discovery well.

The 2009 Iguacu discovery is also located in this area.

Petrobras serves as the operator of the block with 45 percent interest. Project partners include BG Group with 30 percent and Repsol with 25 percent.
