Consumers Energy continues to investigate a natural gas explosion that occurred shortly after 9:00 AM on December 29 at a furniture store located in Wayne, a suburb of Detroit.

On behalf of its employees, Consumers Energy expresses its deepest sympathies to the families of those who were killed in the explosion, and hopes for a full recovery for those who were injured. Consumers Energy extends its gratitude to City of Wayne officials and employees, including the police and fire departments, as well as the many other community and county agencies that assisted with this incident.

Prior to the explosion, Consumers Energy received two calls reporting the smell of natural gas approximately two blocks from the site of the explosion. With Consumers Energy employees in the area investigating a possible gas leak, the explosion occurred at William C. Franks Furniture.

Initial indications revealed two suspected leaks in the area, and additional evacuations were ordered as a precautionary measure yesterday afternoon. However, it has now been confirmed that there was only one natural gas leak, which occurred in a natural gas main adjacent to the site of the explosion.

Families displaced by the evacuation were provided lodging by Consumers Energy at a local hotel for the night. As of the morning of Dec. 30, all area residents have now been able to return to their homes.

Consumers Energy will continue to work closely with the City of Wayne and public safety officials to provide updates as more information becomes available. Additionally, the company is working closely and cooperatively with police and fire officials, the Michigan Public Service Commission and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration to determine the cause of the explosion.
