American Electric Power announced it will accelerate the construction process of a natural gas-fired power plant near Dresden, Ohio. The partially constructed plant was purchased in 2007 by AEP through its AEP Generating Company subsidiary from Dresden Energy LLC, a subsidiary of Dominion.

AEP expects the plant to be operational during the first quarter of 2012. When completed, the Dresden plant will be a nominal 580-megawatt natural gas-fired combined-cycle plant and will create approximately 25 permanent jobs. While under construction, approximately 300 temporary jobs will be created.

"The completion of the Dresden plant will provide AEP the most cost-effective solution to meet our customers' energy needs," said Michael G. Morris, AEP's chairman and chief executive officer. "As we continue to diversify our generating fleet, the time is right to accelerate construction of this plant. The Dresden plant will help meet the growth in demand in our eastern states and continue to improve our environmental profile while adding job growth to the region."
