Man dies at ExxonMobil refinery in Chalmette, Louisiana

According to a report from the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana, a contract worker has died at ExxonMobil’s (NYSE:XOM) Chalmette refinery while working to repair a leak.

Employed by Team Industrial Services Inc. of Harahan,Gregory Starkey, age 33, died while working alongside a crew to repair a hydrogen sulfide leak from a pipe at the refinery. Despite resuscitation attempts, Starkey was pronounced dead at the scene late on the evening of Oct. 6.

The Sheriff’s Office was called to the scene, and investigations are currently under way to determine the cause of the man’s death.

“There wasn’t any indication of foul play,” reported the Sheriff’s Office.

The leak has been contained.

Located just outside of New Orleans, Chalmette Refining is a 50/50 joint venture with PDVSA, the state-run oil company of Venezuela. Operated by ExxonMobil, the refinery employs some 1,000 people.

Considered a mid-size facility, Chalmette Refining has a processing capacity for 192,500 barrels per day. The refinery receives crude oil from Louisiana’s Gulf Coast and Venezuela, for which it is equipped to handle heavy oil.
