Explosion at gas processing plant in Russia injures 13

By Phaedra Friend Troy

According to a report from Reuters, an explosion at a Novatek gas processing plant in the Yamal-Nenets region of Arctic Russia has injured 13 workers.

The gas processing plant is located near the Khancheskoye gas field, which constitutes 10 percent of Novatek’s gas production.

“The explosion resulted in 13 people receiving injuries of various degrees,” the Russian Emergencies Ministry reported. “The operations building was destroyed.”

Fortunately, a fire did not ignite because of the explosion.

Discovered in 1990, the Khancheskoye natural gas field began producing natural gas and condensate in 2001, and oil in 2007.

Novatek is Russia’s second-largest natural gas producer. According to Novatek, Yamal-Nenets is the largest natural gas producing region in the world, containing 20 percent of the world’s gas production.
