CONSOL Energy to close coal mines in Utah, Pennsylvania

By Dorothy Davis

CONSOL Energy (NYSE: CNX) announced the permanent closing of its Pennsylvania based Mine 84 and the idling of its Utah based Emery mine resulting in worker furloughs and lay offs beginning December 1st.

In compliance with the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act CONSOL Energy outlined plans for both coal producing mines in public press releases after briefing employees and stake holders Friday. In both cases the company attributed the closings to higher production costs relative to lower regional and market demands.

Approximately 135 hourly and 36 salary workers at the Utah Emery mine will be affected by layoffs and furloughed. It is not known how long Emery Mine will be idled.

"It is unfortunate that we need to take this action, since the employees at Emery Mine have worked safely for more than 400 days without a single injury, and have done everything they could to keep the operation running," said Jimmy Brock, CONSOL Energy senior vice president – operations.
The closing of Pennsylvania based Mine 84 will see 43 hourly and 17 salary workers affected by the shut down who will be offered the option of employment at other CONSOL facilities.

"Mine 84 has been in operation for many decades, and it is unfortunate that the time has come when it was no longer able to compete in today's markets," said Jimmy Brock, CONSOL Energy senior vice president – operations. "But CONSOL will be offering the affected employees positions at other company operations."
