Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station marked its second consecutive breaker-to-breaker run (continuous operation between refueling outages) when operators safely shut down Unit 2 on Sunday, Sept. 12 at 8:00 p.m. ET for a scheduled refueling outage. At the time of the shutdown, Peach Bottom Unit 2 had run continuously for 691 days since its last refueling in 2008. Peach Bottom recorded a similar continuous run on the same unit from 2006 to 2008, which reached 705 days.

“These consecutive breaker-to-breaker runs at Peach Bottom demonstrate our commitment to world-class performance and to the safety and reliability of our operations,” said Tom Dougherty, Peach Bottom site vice president.

During the shutdown, Exelon Nuclear employees and supplemental workers will perform approximately 15,000 inspections and maintenance activities on a variety of plant components and systems. This includes replacing nearly a third of the reactor’s fuel. Many of the activities performed during the shutdown cannot be performed while the plant is running.

The station will utilize the talents and expertise of more than 1,500 supplemental workers to support this biennial effort. Many of these workers travel to Peach Bottom from outside the area, providing a significant boost to the local economy during the outage period.

Peach Bottom has two boiling water reactors, which jointly produce over 2,200 megawatts of electricity, powering more than two million homes. Peach Bottom Unit 3 will continues to run at full power during the outage.
