Mariner Energy: No injuries, no oil spilled due to platform fire in the US Gulf of Mexico

By Phaedra Friend Troy

Houston-based Mariner Energy, the operator of the ill-fated Vermillion 380 platform, confirmed that a fire occurred on its production platform on Vermillion Block 380.

The company released a statement Thursday afternoon stating that all 13 staff from the production platform were evacuated and “safely accounted for,” and that no injuries to the staff have been reported.

Additionally, Mariner stated that an initial flyover of the scene offshore Louisiana did not detect an oil spill.

While the cause of the accident is unknown, Mariner asserts that the company is working with regulatory authorities in response to the incident and an investigation is under way.

During the last week of August 2010, production from the Vermillion 380 production platform averaged 9.2 million cubic feet of natural gas and 1,400 barrels of oil and condensate a day.

The US Coast Guard reported earlier Thursday that rescue helicopters and ships were called to an explosion and fire aboard the offshore oil and gas facility and that 13 personnel had been recovered from the water near the platform.
