Jascon 25 to support West Atlas removal

Offshore staff

DARWIN, Australia -- Sea Trucks’ construction vessel Jascon 25 has arrived in northern Australia to start work on removal of the damaged jackup West Atlas.

For this project Sea Trucks Australia formed a partnership with Svitzer Salvage Australasia. The rig, which is currently next to the Montara wellhead platform in the Timor Sea, has to be removed following damage incurred during a blow-out of one of the Montara field wells and a subsequent fire last year.

The contract scope includes cleaning and removal of debris from the rig and the cantilever drill floor which is extended over the platform, followed by jacking down of the rig and tow-out to Singapore.

Jascon 25 will be the main support vessel in the removal operation. This is a newly built, multi- purpose DP-3 offshore construction vessel featuring an 800-metric ton (882-ton) crane, a large deck space, and extensive accommodation capacity. Sea Trucks has also installed for this project a hydraulically-operated “intelligent” gangway to ensure safe transfer of personnel to and from the West Atlas.

Removal works should take around three months to complete. A combined Sea Trucks and Svitzer management and engineering team are running the project from the Sea Trucks base in Perth.

The Jascon 25 previously was off northwest Australia on the BHP Pyrenees project installations for 10 months.
