Gassco completes Karsto natural gas processing hub turnaround

The Kårstø processing plant, which has been shut down since August 18, is now back in full operation. No serious health, safety or environmental incidents have been reported.

Gassco reported that the Kårstø facility is subject to a full planned turnaround every six years, involving a comprehensive inspection and maintenance program.

During the latest three-week shutdown, extensive modification and upgrading work has also performed at the plant as part of the Kårstø expansion project (KEP2010).

“We are very satisfied that no serious HSE incidents were recorded,” says Svein Birger Thaule, vice president for process plant operations at Gassco. “We’re particularly pleased because of the high number of work-hours performed and the complexity of the jobs which have been carried out.”

It was not least important to complete the upgrading of the safety systems during the period when the plant was free of gas. A large number of signals have been changed.

The good preparations made for this complex work proved a success, reports Mr Thaule. “Many people deserve praise for their solid commitment at Kårstø.

“Detailed preparations and good collaboration between a large number of players have helped us to complete the work on schedule and to avoid serious HSE incidents.

“This has been a demanding turnaround, so it is all the more gratifying to see that employees in Gassco, technical service provider Statoil and not least our sub-contractors have really worked hard to complete the job as well as possible.”

Kårstø is an important hub in Norway’s gas transport system, and KEP2010 aims to make it robust for safe and efficient operation over many years to come.

Located north of Stavanger, the plant processes gas and condensate (light oil) from 30 fields on the Norwegian continental shelf.
