Leading peak-oil analyst and founder of the Ocean Energy Research Institute in Maine, Matthew R. Simmons has passed away.

The group he helped to found reported Monday that Simmons died suddenly on Sunday.

Simmons served as an energy advisor to President George W. Bush and authored the 2005 peak-oil book “Twilight in the Desert: The Coming Saudi Oil Shock and the World Economy.” He also served as the chairman of Simmons & Company International, which was an energy investment banking firm he founded in 1974. He is a past chairman of the National Ocean Industry Association, as well as a member of the National Petroleum Council.

In 2007, Simmons founded Ocean Energy Research Institute, a venture capital fund and think-tank focused on increasing renewable offshore energy.

Maine Governor John Baldacci mourned Simmons’ passing saying, “Matt Simmons was an innovative thinker who pushed ideas that have the potential to yield a more environmentally and economically sustainable future for Maine and the world.”
