Polskie LNG awards Atkins engineering contract for Poland LNG plant

Source: Atkins

Atkins, the UK’s largest engineering design consultancy, has been awarded a US $11.4 million (£7.7 million) contract to oversee the design and construction of a new US $737.4 million (£500 million) liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant by Polskie LNG in Swinoujscie, Poland. The facility is the first such installation in central Europe.

Atkins has been selected to carry out the role of Investor’s Supervisor for the 4.5 year project, which will see a team of 40 staff reviewing design, supervising construction and bringing the complex into operational use.

Steve Novis, Atkins’ managing director in Poland, said: “This is a major investment by Polskie LNG and it will require precision project management to ensure the concept can be taken through to reality. The facility will be unique in Eastern Europe and as such it will be closely watched by other countries in the region.

“To make sure the project is successful Atkins has established an exceptional technical team combining industry and construction experts from around the world. The team has specific experience in LNG and will bring the highest standards to this flagship project.”

Atkins has a wealth of experience in carrying out projects in the petrochemical and energy sectors from inception to completion and has gained specific experience around the world in LNG installations. The company has also previously carried out the role of Investor’s Supervision internationally for a range of clients including financial institutions and funding bodies.

The LNG terminal, due to open in 2014, will receive natural gas by sea from virtually any direction in the world, which will increase Poland’s energy security. Natural gas is also regarded as the cleanest burning fossil fuel and its use will make a contribution towards reducing the country’s state-wide carbon footprint.

Mr Zbigniew Rapciak, President of the Management Board of Polskie LNG S.A., commented: “This is the first of the two major contracts for implementation of the LNG Terminal, which is the key investment in ensuring energy security for Poland, and it provides an opportunity for business development in Swinoujscie and the Zachodniopomorski region. Atkins is a company experienced in conducting projects requiring the highest competence and we are confident that with their technical excellence our investment will follow the highest global standards.”
