WASHINGTON, DC, June 15 -- US President Barack Obama plans to appoint Natural Resources Defense Council Pres. Frances G. Beinecke and four other people to the special commission investigating the Gulf of Mexico oil spill and the future of offshore drilling in the US, the White House said on June 14.

Beinecke became the environmental organization’s president in 2006 and has worked there for 35 years. She was a coastal resource specialist in its water and coastal programs from 1974 through 1983, according to the White House.

The other nominees will be Donald Boesch, president of the University of Maryland’s Center for Environmental Science; Terry D. Garcia, executive vice-president for mission programs at the National Geographic Society; Cherry A. Murray, dean of Harvard University’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences; and Frances Ulmer, chancellor of the University of Alaska at Anchorage.

They will join former Florida Gov. Bob Graham and former US Environmental Protection Agency Administrator William K. Reilly, whom Obama appointed as the special commission’s co-chairmen soon after he announced its formation in late May.
