Cyclone Phet shuts-in production in Oman, heads back into Arabian Sea

By Phaedra Friend Troy

After traveling through the Arabian Sea packing strong winds and high waves, Tropical Cyclone Phet has passed over Oman.

Look to PennEnergy and its daily Global Offshore Weather Report for up-to-date video coverage of offshore wind, waves and weather for the nine busiest offshore regions worldwide, including the Middle East and South Asia.

In preparation for the cyclone, some oil and gas production in Oman was shut in; although Reuters reports that no facilities were damaged in the storm.

On its approach into Oman, Cyclone Phet wielded peak winds of 140 miles an hour and waves measuring more than 50 feet high, but as the storm neared the shore, it lost some of it strength.

“Those seas at times, were peaking over 52 feet,” advised Dave Gorham, meteorologist with ImpactWeather. “However, as the storm makes its way on shore, that system will gradually diminish winds, and therefore the seas will gradually diminish, as well.”

Cyclone Phet hit Sur, which is where the country houses three LNG trains -- all of which are being shut-in, reported Reuters.

Because no ships can anchor offshore Oman, production is being shut-in even after the storm has passed.

Now Cyclone Phet has reentered the Arabian Sea, making its way toward Pakistan.
