Sea Lion confirmed as an oil discovery offshore the Falkland Islands

By Phaedra Friend Troy

Rockhopper Exploration has confirmed exploration well 14/10-2 on the Sea Lion prospect as the first oil discovery in the North Falkland Basin.

Well logging data retrieved from the discovery well has confirmed 174 feet (53 meters) of net oil pay in multiple zones. With the thickest sand confirmed as 82 feet (25 meters) of net pay, the average porosity of the find is 19 to 28 percent with excellent permeability. Furthermore, no oil-water contact as been transected.

“The logs clearly indicate that we have encountered a high-quality reservoir interval with very good porosity and permeability,” said Samuel Moody, managing director of Rockhopper Exploration. “This increases the likelihood that we will return to this well later during the campaign to carry out a flow test.”

Rockhopper is continuing with well logging analysis and will collect fluid samples for further testing. A liner will be run on the well to permit the well to be suspended for future testing operations.

The company is now considering adding another well to its current drilling campaign with the Ocean Guardian rig in the North Falkland Basin to appraise the Sea Lion oil discovery.

In early April, Desire Petroleum discovered natural gas at the Liz prospect offshore the Falkland Islands. Liz 14/19-1 was a natural gas discovery in two zones.

This is the first drilling in the North Falkland Basin. Argentina tried to stop drilling here when President Cristina Fernandez closed Argentinean ports to ships visiting the Falklands.
