Benjarong well encounters two plays

Offshore staff

HOUSTON -- Coastal Energy has announced preliminary findings from its Benjarong A-02 exploratory well in the Gulf of Thailand.

The well was drilled to a total depth of 11,127 ft (3,391 m). It encountered 30.5 ft (9.3 m) of net pay in the Eocene reservoir with 15% average porosity.

A further, non-conventional zone with oil shows was intersected in the Oligocene limestone. Coastal plans to test the viability of both plays.

The company has run completion casing on both the Benjarong A-01 and A-02 wells and will start completing A-01 this week.

Once operations on both wells are concluded, the drilling rig will mobilize to the Bua Ban field to spud a first development well, while a mobile offshore production unit (MOPU) will be installed at Benjarong to undertake flow tests on the A-01 and A-02 wells, supported by a hydraulic workover rig.

Randy Bartley, Chief Executive Officer of Coastal Energy, said: “We anticipate drilling up to ten wells at Bua Ban in the second and third quarters [0f 2010]. As each well is drilled, production will be tied in to existing fixed platform facilities.”
