ABB won an order worth $13 million from Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam Limited (HVPNL), a leading power utility in the northern Indian state of Haryana, to build a 400 kV (kilovolt) substation that will facilitate the transmission of electricity from new power generation plants being constructed in the region. The order was booked in the first quarter.

The Dhanonda substation is scheduled for completion in 2011, and will comprise fifteen 400 kV bays and three 220 kV bays, as well as three 315 MVA, 400/220 kV power transformers. Other key ABB products to be supplied include high-voltage circuit breakers, instrument transformers and PLCC (power line carrier communication)equipment.

The substation will also be equipped with the latest IEC 61850 substation automation system to facilitate open communication between the numerous control and protection devices within the substation and beyond. ABB is responsible for the system engineering, civil works, supply, installation, commissioning and overall project management.

HVPNL is responsible for building, operating and maintaining substations and transmission lines in Haryana. Other recent ABB orders from HVPNL include the construction of seven 220 kV and three 132 kV substations, part of the state‘s initiative to upgrade its power transmission grid.

"The substation will help make more power available to meet growing demand for electricity in the region” said Oleg Aleinikov, head of ABB's substations business, a part of the company’s Power Systems division. ”They will also improve the reliability and efficiency of the transmission grid.”

Substations are key installations in the power grid that transform voltage levels and facilitate the safe and efficient transmission and distribution of electricity. They include equipment that protects and controls electrical power. ABB is the world’s leading supplier of air- and gas-insulated substations covering a range of voltage levels up to 1,100 kV.
