Brazilian super-producer Petrobras (PBR) has made an oil discovery with exploratory well 4-PM-53 in the shallow waters of the post-salt area of the Campos Basin offshore Brazil.
Estimated recoverable reserves in the 4_PM-53 well are 25 million barrels of oil. Producing 20-degree API oil, the discovery well is expected to flow 3,000 barrels of oil a day because of exceptional porosity and permeability.
The 4-PM-53 discovery "opens an important exploratory front" just east of the Pampo and Bicudo fields, claimed Petrobras. This 4-PM-53 discovery well is situated near the Pampo field, just six kilometers from the Pampo production platform, PPM-1.
Because there is existing infrastructure so near, the potential of tying back to the Pampo platform, which is producing in the Bicudo field, is currently being studied. Production from the new discovery is expected to come on-stream within the year.
Petrobras has strategically chosen to increase exploration activities in areas surrounding already producing fields, hoping to take advantage of existing infrastructure in an effort to reduce cost of development and speed up bringing the resources to market.
More well are planned to be drilled in the surrounding waters of the Campos Basin.
