ConocoPhillips Alaska president dies in avalanche, colleague missing

The president of Alaskan operations for ConocoPhillips (COP) has passed away. Jim Bowles died this weekend in a snowmobiling accident on the Kenai Peninsula of Alaska.

Bowles was part of a snowmobiling party on the Kenai Peninsula south of Anchorage on Saturday, when an avalanche overtook two of the members of the party, reports Reuters.

A ConocoPhillips colleague, Alan Gage was also overcome by the avalanche. Gage, a member of the ConocoPhillips capital projects team, is missing.

“The entire ConocoPhillips family is deeply saddened and will greatly miss ConocoPhillips Alaska President Jim Bowles, who has served our company with distinction,” said Jim Mulva, the chairman and CEO of ConocoPhillips. “Jim died and fellow employee Alan Gage is missing following an avalanche while snow machining on Feb.13 on Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula.”

Bowles has served as the leader of ConocoPhillips Alaskan assets and the 900 employees there since 2004.

“On behalf of everyone at ConocoPhillips, including those who had the privilege to know and work with these two gentlemen and those who did not, I want to extend our sincere condolences to the Bowles family and our heartfelt best wishes to the Gage family and make sure they know the high regard in which we hold Jim and Alan, both as co-workers and as friends,” continued Mulva.
