Siemens officially opens UK wind turbine factory

Government energy secretary Greg Clark was present to officially open the new Siemens wind turbine factory in Hull, England on Thursday.

The £310m facility will see manufacturing, assembly and servicing factories for the offshore wind industry, and provide over 1000 jobs.

Dr Doug Parr, Greenpeace Chief Scientist welcomed the news, but urged clarity from the government on green energy plans in general.

“The UK has the potential to become a world leader in manufacturing, design and services of offshore wind projects. But for this to take off, companies needs a strong signal from the government that Britain is open for business and is still an attractive investment environment for cutting edge renewable technologies and infrastructure, such as offshore wind or solar and battery storage."

Each wind turbine blade manufactured at the site weighs 28 tonnes and is made of balsa wood and fibreglass and the first batch of 75-metre blades have emerged from the plant.

The Guardian reports that for the next two to three years, the blades built at the site will be shipped to offshore windfarms around planned or under way in the UK.

Clark referred to Brexit negotiations when he said, “I want this plant to export,” he said. “The ability to trade without tariffs is very important.”

He also insisted that investors should be confident in the government’s actions in terms of clean energy.

“There’s no disguising, no ambiguity whatever, about the centrality of clean energy that we see not just to our commitments on climate change, vital though they are, and the energy sector, but to industry more generally,” he said.
