NTPC’s installed capacity exceeds 48 GW

NTPC Limited, the largest power utility in India, has increased its installed capacity to 48,028 MW, with the recent commissioning of the first 800 MW unit of the Kudgi Super Thermal Power Station, located in the state of Karnataka.

When completed, Kudgi will have an installed capacity of 4000 MW.

This high-efficiency coal-fired power plant is being built in two phases. In the first phase, three 800 MW units will be constructed, while the second phase will comprise two further 800 MW units.

Although the government of Prime Minister Modi has highly ambitious renewable energy development plans - 175 GW of installed capacity by 2022 - coal-fired power is expected to remain an important part of this south asian nation's generation mix as it seeks to bring electricity to all its citizens.

Currently NTPC has in the region of 23,000 MW of new capacity under implementation at 23 locations across India.

NTPC, which currently is responsible for producing close to 24% of the country’s electricity, also has an ambitious goal of achieving 130,000 MW of installed capacity by 2032.

In related news, a wholly-owned subsidiary of NTPC, NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Limited, has signed a PPA with Nepal Electricity Authority for the supply of up to 160 MW of electricity between January 2017 and May 2017 via the Muzaffarpur-Dhalkebar transmission link.
