DEWA on track with plant expansion

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has announced that it passed the halfway point in the expansion of M-Station, the UAE’s newest and largest power and desalination plant.

DEWA is now set to inaugurate two gas turbine generators on 31 May 2017, which will be followed by the addition of two heat recovery steam turbine generators and one back-pressure steam turbine on 30 April 2018.

The company says that this will increase the plant’s thermal efficiency from 82.4 per cent to 85.8 per cent, which it adds “is considered one of the highest thermal-efficiency rates in the world”.

M-Station was launched in 2013 and its expansion is due to be completed by April 2018.

The expansion project includes new power generation units with a capacity of 700 MW to be added to the current capacity of the station to eventually produce 2760 MW – its current total capacity is 2060 MW of electricity and 140m imperial gallons of water per day.
