GE announces Hinkley steam turbine contract win

GE has won a $1.9bn supply contract for the UK’s Hinkley Point C nuclear power project, which was approved yesterday by the government.

Under the contract terms, GE’s Steam Power Systems business unit will supply two power islands including two 1770 MW steam turbines, generators and associated critical equipment.

The turbine model to be supplied is the company’s Arabelle (pictured), which came to GE through its acquisition of Alstom last year. According to GE, this turbine model is currently used in one-third of the world’s nuclear power plants.

GE said it has been working with Hinkley project developer EDF for over six months under an Early Contractor Involvement agreement, which includes activities such as safety classification studies, planning, civil works interfaces, pre-engineering and procurement planning.

Under the new contract GE’s Steam Power Systems Global Centre of Excellence, based in Belfort, France, will enter the next phase of design, engineering and manufacturing, as well as ramping up procurement with suppliers.

Andreas Lusch, president and CEO of GE’s Steam Power Systems, said: “Producing power that meets today’s greenhouse gas emission standards is a top priority. The Arabelle turbine represents six decades of nuclear steam turbine expertise and it’s the most powerful turbine in the world by output. We are pleased to continue to work with EDF Energy to deliver clean, reliable power that will bolster the UK’s energy infrastructure.”
