De Rivaz urges UK government to back Hinkley nuclear

Vincent de Rivaz, the chief executive of EDF, has used a newspaper article to appeal to the British government to grant approval to the Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant.

A decision is due in a matter of weeks following Prime Minister Theresa May’s time out to consider the deal in greater detail. There has been much negative publicity in the media about the strike price agreed for the plant’s power, it being deemed too expensive.

Writing in the Sunday Telegraph, EDF chief executive Vincent de Rivaz accuses critics of "overlooking the positive impact" of the scheme.

"Hinkley Point will have a lasting impact on our industrial capacity and will create thousands of jobs and hundreds of apprenticeships. Billions of pounds will be invested into the economy of south-west of England. Across Britain, dozens of companies and our own workforce are ready to deliver this project. Their motivation remains high and they are looking forward to getting on with the job.”

"Detractors have filled many column inches and broadcast hours. We have chosen to let policymakers focus on the facts.”

In recent weeks press attention has focused on apparent activity by the government which indicates that they are looking for reasons to back out of the project. There is also suspicion of the Chinese involvement in the UK’s energy infrastructure, and the potential for hacking. The government is said to be looking for a means of withdrawing while preserving good relations with China.

“Some critics risk losing sight of the bigger picture by overlooking the positive impact and importance of this investment for Britain - and ignoring the basic and unchanged facts which underpin the project," said de Rivaz, who also defended Chinese state-owned nuclear company CGN.

"We know and trust our Chinese partners," writes Mr de Rivaz. "The control systems at Hinkley Point C will be isolated from IT systems and the internet."
