Doosan to build coal-fired power plant in Vietnam

Korea’s Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction has won a $560m contract to build a coal-fired power plant in Vietnam, the firm announced this week.

The 600 MW plant is to be built as an extension to the 600 MW Vinh Tan IV plant (pictured), located in Vĩnh Tan commune, Tuy Phong district, Binh Thuan province. The existing plant came online in 2013.

The contract was awarded by Vietnam Electricity (EVN), the country’s largest utility, which aims to procure more power for the eastern region where there have been power shortages since the summer as flooding has disrupted fuel transport.

Doosan will be responsible for engineering, procurement and construction on the project as well as the balance of plant equipment. The firm will also supply equipment and auxiliary devices to the existing plant as well as the extension.

August 2019 is the scheduled date of completion.

Kim Hun-tak, CEO of Doosan Heavy’s EPC business group, said his firm had won “some seven trillion won ($5.88bn) worth of orders from Vietnam in the last five years. We will continuously make efforts to secure more orders in the Vietnamese power plant market, the capacity of which will reach 30 GW in 2020.”
