DEWA and RWE to collaborate on renewables R&D

Dubai’s Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has signed a memorandum of understanding with Germany’s RWE to collaborate on renewable energy research and development.

Under the terms of the agreement, the two firms aim to enhance their co-operation on research into power, smart grids and sustainable development and will undertake analyses of the technical, economic and environmental aspects of alternative energy scenarios.

Specifically, DEWA said the two companies will work together on smart grid testing, energy storage, energy efficiency, improving solar cell reliability, and various products and services for smart grids.

The co-operation comes under the rubric of DEWA’s contribution to the Smart Dubai initiative, which aims to advance the implementation of ‘smart city’ technologies.

DEWA Managing Director and CEO Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer (pictured, left) said the agreement supports his company's goal of promoting innovation in the global energy market.

Dr Klaus Grellmann (pictured, right), CEO of RWE Consulting, said: "We look forward to working with DEWA in solar and other alternative and renewable sources of energy. We intend to set an innovative role model in the region for the sustainable development and ease of connecting renewable energy sources with existing electricity grids.”
