Israeli firm awarded funding for floating solar power plant

Israel is to team with the US to develop floating solar power plant technology.

The country’s Ministry of National Infrastructure, Energy and Water Resources (MIEW) has announced the selection of six projects, which will collectively receive $5.1m, under the Binational Industrial Research and Development (BIRD) Energy programme in collaboration with the US Department of Energy.

Each BIRD Energy project is to be undertaken jointly by an Israeli and a US company. The projects to be funded will aim to address energy challenges and opportunities of interest to both countries, with a focus on commercializing renewable power technologies that improve economic competitiveness, create jobs and support innovation.

Israel’s Solaris Synergy Ltd, in partnership with US-based Pristine Sun LLC, will receive funding under the programme. In late 2014 Solaris Synergy commissioned its first 50 kW floating solar photovoltaic (PV) system (pictured) in the northern Eshkol reservoir owned by Mekorot, Israel’s national water company. The system is now grid-connected and selling power to Mekorot, the company said.

Other projects awarded funding under the programme include a light detection and ranging (LiDAR)-based wind farm controller and optimizer from Rehovat-based Pentalum Technologies Ltd and Texas Tech University; printed solar photovoltaics from Jerusalem-based 3GSolar Photovoltaics Ltd and Pennsylvania-based Arkema Inc; and technology to protect birds and bats near wind power plants from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and New York-based Biomathematics Inc.
