GE announces largest Chinese gas engine order

GE has received the largest single order for its Jenbacher gas engines in China, the company announced this week.

The firm said it will supply Shanxi Jincheng Coal Group with 12 3.5 MW J620 engines for the expansion of a coal mine methane (CMM) gas-fired power plant at the Changzhuang coal mine in Jincheng City, Shanxi province.

The gas engines are scheduled to be delivered to the site in December 2015, with commercial operation planned for March 2016. The 40 MW expansion project will bring the plant’s capacity to 58 MW. The power will be used on-site, with the excess sold to the local grid.

GE said it will provide commissioning services for the generator sets and related equipment. The Jereh Combined Energy Corporation, GE’s Chinese EPC partner, will provide equipment including radiators, silencers, control panels, exhaust boilers and associated equipment, as well as installation.

CMM gas is expected to be a significant growth segment for power generation in China over the next five years, especially in Shanxi province where more than 30 per cent of the country’s CMM reserves and 40 per cent of production operations are located.

The project supports China’s efforts to reduce emissions from coal-fired power production.
